      Berlin is the top travel destination. No city was visited by more people in 2019 than the capital. With almost 13.9 million tourists, it is far ahead of all other German cities.

      Berlin shines with a cultural diversity, such as museums and collections on Museum Island. Opera houses, theaters and concert halls are also part of the cultural diversity in the capital. The Berlin Festival and the International Film Festival also contribute to the attractiveness of the cultural metropolis.

      The main attractions are the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Kurfürstendamm and Charlottenburg Palace.

      Munich is the state capital of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg. Munich is also the second most popular holiday destination in Germany. The city is located in southern Germany with just under 1.5 million inhabitants. In 2019, almost 8.7 million tourists were counted.

      Munich is one of the most important economic, transport and cultural centers.Many different universities and academies can be found in Munich, for example the Ludwig Maximilians University.

      The English Garden is world famous. This runs from the center to the northern city limits of Munich. It is even bigger than Central Park in New York. The Olympic Park is also popular with tourists, as are other parks such as the West Park and the Nymphenburg Palace Park.

      Hamburg is also a very popular travel destination in Germany. Around 1.8 million people live in the northern German port city. This number increased to 7.6 million tourists in 2019. 40 percent of the total area in Hamburg is arable and garden land, as well as parks and public green spaces. A further 28 percent consist of landscape and nature reserves.

      The Hanseatic City of Hamburg is seen on the one hand as a place of freedom and tolerance and on the other hand is considered a city of education and culture. With ten universities, Hamburg is the center of scientific education, research and development.

      The main attractions are on the one hand the district of Sankt Pauli with the Reeperbahn and on the other hand buildings like the Hamburg Michel. The impressive harbor is of course also worth seeing in Hamburg.

      Frankfurt am Main is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Germany. In 2019, around 6.3 million people visited the city. With over 660,000 inhabitants, it is Hesse's largest city. Throughout Germany, Frankfurt is in 5th place in the largest cities and only has to surrender to Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne. Frankfurt is now considered one of the richest cities in Europe. It is a banking, trade fair, literary and cultural city.

      Three of the most important sights are in the old town of Frankfurt. These include the Kaiserdom, Römerberg and the Paulskirche. The Römerberg is the most important square in the old town with the town hall. The Old Nikolaikirche can also be found there. The Paulskirche was the main Protestant church in Frankfurt until 1944. Paulsplatz is a popular city square with many cafés.

      Berlin as well as Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt offer many places of interes that attract tourists. The most famous attractions of all cities are presented below.

      Berlin - Victory Column

      Alongside the Brandenburg Gate and the TV tower, the Victory Column is the most famous landmark in Berlin. The approx. 69 meter high column served for a long time as the closing party of the Love Parade, which is why it became famous. Originally, however, the Victory Column was dedicated to acts of war.

      Munich - victory gate

      The victory gate consists of the Bavaria with its lion team. The arch of Constantine in Rome was the model for the building. The gate was built in honor of the Bavarian army. This is confirmed by an inscription on the victory gate. Furthermore, many motifs of the reliefs with battle scenes can be seen. The gate marks the end of Ludwigstrasse and the beginning of the Schwabing district of Munich.

      Hiking trails in Germany

      The most beautiful and best-known hiking trails in all of Germany are listed below.

      Höhenweg Rennsteig

      This hiking trail runs through the Thuringian Forest. Up to 100,000 hikers travel there every year. The Rennsteig mountain trail offers a wealth of wonderful natural impressions. These include forest-crowned heights, wonderful valleys, blooming meadows and breathtaking views of old villages, castles and palaces.

      Total length: The hiking trail is 170 km long and can be divided into 8 stages between 19 and almost 26 km in length.

      Eifelsteig

      The Eifelsteig runs through North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. It begins at Aachen Cathedral and ends at Porta Nigra in Trier. Hikers pass through raised bog areas, national parks and the Vulkaneifel. Many paths lead past the peculiarities of the volcanic landscape. For example, the millstone caves of Gerolstein or the Maar wine fields can be viewed.

      Total length: The hiking trail runs over 313 km in 15 stages between 14 and 28 km in length. The route can also be divided into several sections.

      Goldsteig

      The Goldsteig hiking trail leads hikers through the Upper Palatinate and Bavarian Forest. The Goldsteig is the longest certified hiking trail in Germany. The southern route of the trail is very suitable for beginners, while the northern route is more suitable for experienced hikers due to its mountain climbs, such as the Großer Arber. With different ponds, lakes and mountains, the Goldsteig offers a fascinating variety of nature.

      Total length: The route is 660 kilometers in 23 daily stages between 14.5 and 32 km in length. There is also a large number of access and circular routes.

      Harzer Hexenstieg

      This hiking trail is in Lower Saxony and leads from Osterode in the west to Thale in the east. The trail is considered the northernmost forest in Germany. Part of the way is climbing the Brocken at an altitude of 1142 meters. The trail offers a diversity of nature including green mixed and coniferous forests, rocky gorges and raised bogs.

      Total length: The hiking trail is a total of 94 km long and can be divided into five thematic sections. There are also two alternative routes with less height differences.

      Kammweg

      The Kammweg leads through Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria. It is one of the oldest hiking trails in Europe. Dense forests set the tone during hiking. In addition to numerous animals and diverse plants, there is also a lot to discover about life in the region. There is a lot to experience, from museums, castles and fortresses to leisure facilities such as swimming pools and summer toboggan runs.

      Total length: The ridge trail is 285 km long and is divided into 17 daily stages between 18 and 30 km in length.
